Explanations
We can’t begin to attempt to comprehend God’s actions such as Hurricane Katrina, the Tsunami, etc. which take away innocent lives. These disasters and man’s atrocities – Hitler and the Jews, truly test our faith.
Do we believe that we deserve an explanation and if so why. One of the founding principles of Christianity is humility. This is taught with our relations with each other, so what kind of humility do we think is due to God? Do we really believe that He owes us an explanation?
Harking back to Genesis, do we believe it was God's will that Cain murdered Abel? We were given the right to decide our actions on this earth and have total freedom to choose. We know of countless atrocities committed by man to his fellow man, which make us ashamed to be part of the human race. We also know that these acts were carried out by man and were not God's work, however we still ask how God could let this happen.
How many natural disasters can be argued to be self inflicted? The tragedy which struck New Orleans had been predicted and given the intellect we possess, building a city on sinking land and continuing to live and build there whilst it continued to sink, could be argued to be an unsound venture.
Many disasters such as the Tsunami however, we can't explain with any authority. We do know however that God tests us throughout our lives. We also know that in disasters such as these, there are numerous accounts of how people have survived despite all the odds against it. We similarly have no explanation for these miracles of survival.
God accepts that we should question Him. We also should know that as in so many other things, we don't always have 'the big picture'.
